Orgain Organic Plant Based Protein Powder Review

Is Orgain Organic Protein Powder A Good Choice For Protein Supplementation?

When it comes to choosing the best protein supplement for you, there can be a lot to consider.  In this review we’re going to answer the questions you have about Orgain Organic Protein Powder.

We’ll cover everything from how it tastes, to the amino acid profile, to the ingredients it has that you might be skeptical about.

1st of all, don’t confuse Orgain with Organifi; That’s a different protein supplement.

I was introduced to Orgain from one of the employees in the nutrition department at a local Natural Grocer.  I asked him what he thought the best organic vegan protein powder was and Orgain was what he recommended.

I purchased the Vanilla Bean flavor for my wife and I after reading the ingredients and seeing there was nothing on the ingredient label that I didn’t recognize.

Orgain Protein Powder is almost 100% organic, and it’s a Vegan friendly supplement.

So How Does Orgain Organic Protein Powder Taste?

If you’ve tried a variety of protein powders and couldn’t find one you like, Orgain might be for you.  My wife Csilla loves the taste, and she won’t drink a protein drink unless she likes the taste.

I also think it tastes great compared to all of the protein powder drinks I’ve tasted, so I give it a thumbs up for that.

Orgain Is Also Creamy

When it comes to plant based protein powders, you may have tasted some that are kind of chalky.  Orgain has a creamy texture, and it feels digestible when it’s in your mouth.

What Do Others Think About Orgain Vegan Protein Powder?

If you read the reviews on Amazon, you’ll find that it’s got a 4.2 star rating based on customer reviews, which is very good.

I’ve read several of the reviews myself and the pleasant taste is mentioned frequently, in addition to the fact that it’s not chalky like some protein powders.

What’s The Protein Source Of Orgain?

Orgain uses a blend of organic rice protein, pea protein and chia seeds to get a complete amino acid profile, which simply means it’s got enough of all of the essential amino acids to be considered a complete protein.

Answers To Important Questions About Orgain

It’s important to be aware that the total carbohydrates in Orgain Protein Powder are not coming from simple sugars.  5 grams are from fiber and 5 grams are from Erythritol.

Carbohydrates from Erythritol, which is a sugar alcohol that tastes sweet, do not raise blood sugar, and have a caloric value that is 95% less than normal carbohydrates.

The Erythritol in Orgain Organic Protein Powder is Non-GMO (This is good).  The GMO variety of Erythritol is derived from GMO cornstarch.

Fiber contains 0 Calories; So even though there are 15 grams of carbohydrates in a serving of Orgain protein powder, only 5 grams count when considering your net carbohydrate intake.

In case you’re watching your carbohydrate intake, or you are on a carbohydrate restricted diet, this information about Erythritol and fiber will help you calculate your actual carbohydrate intake.

Are The Following Ingredients In Orgain Protein Powder Good For You?

If you are into checking everything you put into your body, you’re probably wondering if the following ingredients in Orgain are good for you.  Those ingredients are:

  • acacia gum
  • inulin
  • rice dextrin
  • guar gum
  • erythritol
  • xanthan gum

The ingredients above will be covered in greater depth on pages specifically about those ingredients, but I wanted to mention them to make you aware of any possible concerns to help you decide if Orgain Organic Protein Powder is for you or not.

Here’s what’s important; All of the ingredients above can be argued for or against.  Some of them have health benefits for some people, especially when they are consumed in small amounts.

I grouped the above ingredients together because they all can have certain similar side effects if consumed in large amounts; or for people that are more sensitive to these ingredients.

Those side effects are mostly intestinal gas, bloating, stomach discomfort and loose stools.

On the positive side, these ingredients can also benefit your health.

For example, inulin is not only a fiber but it’s a prebiotic, meaning it feeds the probiotics (good bacteria) in your gut, helping them to multiply and keep your gut healthy.

One more ingredient worth mentioning is natural flavor.

Many foods have natural flavors added, and these natural flavors can be derived from any type of plant matter, yeasts, any kind of animal, or products created from the fermentation of any of these.

There are multiple methods to extract these natural flavors and “incidental additives” are the chemicals that could end up in your natural flavoring as a result of this process.

It’s worth mentioning that incidental additives are not required to be listed as ingredients.

You may also be wondering if Orgain Plant Based Protein Powder is good for weight loss and muscle gain.

To put it simply, the amounts of BCAAs (branched chain amino acids) in Orgain are very close to the amounts found in Pea Protein Powder.

Pea protein powder has been shown to be as effective for muscle gains as whey protein in one study.  It’s also generally believed that the BCAAs in these supplements are mainly what contribute to the muscle gains.

The above being stated, you might be able to get some gains using Orgain organic protein powder.

Regarding weight loss, the main reason protein can be helpful to a person that wants to lose weight is that it is satiating.  Because Orgain tastes good, and it’s satiating (makes you feel satisfied), you can use it as a meal or snack replacement, as an alternative to having something that’s not as good for you.

The extra protein might keep you from eating something more dense in calories, and as a result help you to lose by making the calorie restriction easier.  It’s also important to note that some research has shown that extra protein might help you to retain lean muscle mass while you’re losing weight.

All things considered, you don’t want to regularly consume excessive amounts of protein, because too much is not good for you. I’ve answered these questions in more detail in on our protein powders page.

What’s The Bottom Line For Orgain Organic Protein Powder; Does it get the approval of Things Very Good?

I’m going to say YES.  I know the ingredients in Orgain are organic, vegan friendly, non-GMO and even gluten free.

I’m particularly concerned about the ingredients I put into my body, to an extreme degree, but there’s nothing in this product that I would completely avoid, based on the knowledge I’ve acquired up to this point.

Orgain Tastes Great and has a pretty good amino acid profile for those wanting to insure they get enough protein, or get the extra they need for building more muscle mass.
